What Makes a Family Shoot a Good Idea?

Time passes so quickly and things can change in a heartbeat here are a few good reasons to have your family photos taken now.

Provides a family legacy

In taking this opportunity to create multi-generational photographic memories, you will leave behind a lasting and meaningful legacy for your descendants who, together with their future descendants, will be able actually to see previous generations of their family.

I am one of the top family photographers and recognise how precious these images become.

Babies and children change so quickly

It feels like only yesterday that I was dancing around with my newborn baby to Nora Jones in my living room in my little house in Cape Town in South Africa where my son was born.  Our evening routine consisted of me dancing/gently rocking him to  sleep to Come away with Me and now he is 26 years old and working in a Michelin-starred restaurant: hard to believe!

I am always amazed when my clients return for sitting or cake smashes shoots that the tiny baby that was so helpless in their newborn shoots is now sitting up, smiling, crawling and sometimes even walking. The development is staggering! I believe that having beautiful wall art of these unique stages is a daily reminder of how much they have grown.

My son is now grown up but I still have pictures of him when he was young scattered around the house.  I am now a much older mum and I am sure that I love these pictures more now than I loved them when he was little and only wish I had more pictures of us together (me when I was younger!): these portraits are a great way of recalling those memories and recording these priceless life moments.

Storytelling

Contemporary photography, albums and even multi-image frames/wall art offer families more colourful and exciting ways of telling stories of their family’s journey and of explaining a significant event or time.

The photographs can be used as art to decorate your walls

With a large range of frames/backgrounds and props and wonderful textures I am able to produce an extensive range of wall art to adorn your walls both at home or in your office.  I can think of no better way of helping decorate your home than with gorgeous, timeless and classic portraits of your newborn, baby, children and family.

An event to remember

Do you and your family follow any yearly customs? Are some of your family living abroad and will be visiting the UK?  Are your parents having a big anniversary or birthday coming up? This may be the ideal time to have a shoot with the full family.  You may be able to schedule a  studio session over a family reunion or to create an event to ensure it gets done. Don't pass up the chance to capture these precious images of the family together.

Making Memories

I had people calling me in tears during lockdown as they could not have their baby’s newborn or cake smash photographs taken.  Don’t let life pass you by and wonder why you did not manage to have taken that family portrait or that gorgeous little stage of your child which you loved so much.   You won't remember every moment as a parent, but by taking pictures every year, you can reflect on those times and watch those children grow.

Inclusion

What a joy to include your mum and dad, parents, aunties and uncles, etc. in a shoot.  How wonderful for them to feel included as a valued part of your experience and photographs.  I love this aspect of these shoots.  For many of us lucky enough to have brilliant relationships with our families, it’s just so wonderful to show them how much we love them and want them in our photographs.

Conclusion

As time passes so quickly, children grow up so fast and family life can change its so important to capture the uniqueness of each stage, the connections between family member and to have photographs that  everybody can cherish and appreciate.
