5 Qualities That Make A Good Baby Photographer

I have been photographing newborns for over 12 years and photographing babies and children for around 30 years. Over the past 10 years I have been delighted that photographing newborn babies has become so much more popular. These days, new parents want to capture memories of their little ones with gorgeous, simple and timeless newborn photographs and to use these images to create unique wall art to decorate the baby’s nursery, in their homes or to share with family and friends.  They are aware that this stage of pure innocence can only be captured in the first few weeks after birth: this stage does not last long, as babies grow up so quickly.  For this reason parents seek out professional photographers with years of experience to create these beautiful and timeless photographs.

The art of newborn photography and posing is different to that of a traditional portrait/studio photographer and is its own speciality which requires experience, training and a great eye to get right.   Getting beautiful portraits of newborn babies and ensuring a smooth photo session depends on training, experience and the temperament of the photographer, whilst the character and feel of a shoot depends on the style of the photographer.

I tend to prefer simpler pictures where the baby or child is the focal point but always use a few props in my sessions as I believe it’s these that showcase this unique stage of being able to mould a baby while s/he is sleeping: for newborns the props can help showcase the amazing qualities one can capture only in these early days when a sleeping baby is still able safely to be manipulated. The resulting artistic pictures lend themselves so well to wall art. After all these years I am still fascinated by my subjects and have a genuine love of babies and children and love photographing them at this this unique stage and as a result most parents love to watch me at work and love our shoots.

Qualities that make great Baby Photographers

Patience

You must have heard the words of William Penn, "Patience and Diligence, like faith, remove mountains.". This quote is a perfect fit for the photography profession. Handling a baby can be challenging at times as there are a number of issues that can go wrong. If you spend the time and you are patient, you will eventually be successful and capture those precious moments that parents are so wanting of their babies.

Working Experience

I have been a professional photographer for over 30 years, I studied photography full time for 4 years in my early 20’s (I know I don’t look old enough to have been shooting for this long, but, really, I have!) I have loved the career I have created over the years. I have photographed weddings, done corporate work and photographed thousands of families which gives me a massive advantage as it enriched my portfolio and sharpened my skills which now helps me better adapt and draw on past experience in any situation.Rocking and Vibration

Keeping up to date with Trends and Technology

Keeping up to date with what’s going on in the industry and with trends is massively important. I may not always adopt these trends but I do know about them. A current trend is to go for a slightly "boho" look in the studio. I have not adopted this look as I believe that it will date over time; I prefer a simpler, lasting look

. I am also up to date with the latest software and employ professional retouchers who use the best and most recent software with the best techniques to help my clients to look their best. For more details, please feel free to contact me at 079-0513-9007 or email me at contact@suegreetham.com.

A Distinctive Style

I really love to keep things very simple and aim for classic and timeless photographs. I do love to style a shoot as well: part of the reason I love newborn photography so much is the ability to do that and make something really special. I do use props, headbands, etc., but I tend to aim for my subject to be the focal point and for the bits that are added to the shoot to complement and not to distract from the baby. I always have an in-depth discussion with my clients before the shoot commences so that I fully understand their expectations. I do believe I have developed a distinctive and consistent style of photography.
